Artie and M.J. meet outside the auditorium of a school holiday program and remember that they met there once years ago, when they sat out a Christmas assembly. M.J. was a Jehovah's Witness as a child; Artie was (and is) a Jew. Their families didn't celebrate Christmas and wouldn't allow them to participate in the assembly. As they reminisce, their childhood selves re-enact their childhood meetings. A tentative childhood friendship blossoms into an adult friendship as they talk.
The show has simple production requirements, needing only a bench or chairs and a couple of winter coats. The cast can consist solely of two adults, with lighting and acting style delineating the times they are portraying children, or two children can be cast as the younger selves of M.J. and Artie.
"X" Marks the Yule spins a warm holiday tone in its ten minutes, showing that differing childhood religious observances may impact holiday celebrations, but may also lead to a deeper human understanding between individuals.
