When Elise rebels against her parents' wishes for her to get a proper young lady's education, she gets educated in ways she never expected! Due to a mixup, she and a cabaret singer from the same provincial town end up in Paris at two very different establishments for education. The mistake isn't discovered for weeks, during which time the girls revel in their new circumstances. Even when all the circumstances are straightened out, a happy ending is ensured for all.
A Proper Education for a Proper Young Lady calls for a monumental two-story set with twin staircases and multiple doors, portraying Madame Arnaud's finishing school on one half and Madam Arno's bordello on the other. Two smaller sets are also called for: a dining room table and a cabaret stage with café table. Life-size, linkable cardboard figures on wheels portray all characters except for the eight principals, allowing for spectacular design possibilities.
The human cast consists of Monsieur and Madame Bazille, their daughter Elise, their chauffeur Chacon, cabaret singer Chantelle Chanteau, cabaret busboy Gustave, and the proprietresses of the two establishments: Madame Arnaud and Madam Arno. When they all congregate in Paris, the fireworks of a typical French farce are lit, with slamming doors and mistaken identities galore.
