Larry Rogers comes back after a curfew-caused overnight stay at his work to find that his gay son invited a group of Black Lives Matter protesters to ride out the curfew in the apartment they share. The place is a shambles. Larry rants about race relations in the country as Evan, his son, cleans up. When Evan leaves in search of his missing cellphone, Luke Winslow, a new neighbor, returns a basketball that bounced down to his floor during the protesters' stay. Luke is Black, but was raised by a white family and considers himself Black in color only. Evan then returns, and it's clear that he and Luke have encountered one another before. As the day proceeds and race discussions continue, their relationship becomes clear. Both the relationship and the discussions fall apart.

Lacked Lives Shatter has straightforward prop and set requirements. The action takes place in an open concept, upper floor apartment in which only a living room area and a suggestion of a kitchen need be visible. The first act takes place in the morning; the second act takes place at night. Other than an autographed basketball, props are ordinary household items.
