In the summer of 1805, Jacques-Louis David and Élisabeth Vigée LeBrun carry on a spirited conversation showcasing their artworks and their disparate lives. David, known for his history paintings, was a guiding force during the French Revolution and then was made First Painter under Napoleon. LeBrun, known for her portraits, went into exile during the Revolution, traveling throughout Europe and capturing images of the nobility in whatever nation she was currently encamped in. Their opposing political and artistic viewpoints spark their hour-long discussion.
With liberal use of the contents of LeBrun's memoir and of David's aphoristic pronouncements, the show is full of historical detail. Staging can be simple, but a sophisticated projection scheme is necessary to provide a visual background for the many artworks the two artists reference.
