Fetal Servitude

Heartbeat laws prohibit abortion once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, at six to eight weeks. In Fetal Servitude, pregnant June intends to issue a legal challenge to a newly-instituted state heartbeat law. Her friend Wendy urges her to get an abortion instead. The play documents their interactions with a doctor at a free women's clinic.

With the simple setting of a doctor's office, the play is easily produced. The generally unlikeable female characters sabotage sympathy for June's cause, giving audiences plenty to think about.
