Abner and Lucinda have just been married. At home after the ceremony, Lucinda is tearful because no one from Abner's family has attended. As he reassures her, news comes that his brother has just shown up from the army. As he goes to find him, a telegram arrives. The maid and telegram delivery boy know its sad contents, but Abner and Lucinda do not. The news hits them hard when it is finally revealed.
The setting is the back yard of Abner's family home, but it need not be representational. Props consist of a telegram, another piece of paper, and a pencil. Costumes can set the time period of the play, which can range from 1860 to 1960, during the heyday of the telegram.
Brothers United is a dramatic short play that shows two couples in early stages of their relationships, with the hopefulness of young love contrasted with the sad news of a death.
