Brett and Shelby are concluding their art museum visit at an exhibit that looks like a lifelike statue. But Shelby discovers that the insides of the statue's eyes have been etched with reproductions of the artworks they've just passed through in the galleries. When they find that the statue is actually a living art student, more surprises occur.
In the Eye of the Beheld has simple production requirements, with just a loupe or otoscope needed for viewing the eyes. The action revolves around a seated person, so the play suits itself to very intimate venues.
As the ten-minute play proceeds, the comedy of an unwilling, hungry person being dragged through a museum transforms into a consideration of how art can consume a life. The quiet, reflective ending brings the play to a poignant close.
