It's Christmastime and church choir members and a few spouses have been out caroling in the snow. As they attempt to leave, blizzard conditions prevent all but Wee Will Winterbottom from making it out of the subdivision. As the others gather at the house of their hosts to wait out the storm, they discover a book of songs Wee Will wrote. Songs are picked out and increasingly frantic calls to Wee Will attempt to determine his location as A-Caroling Wee Will Went plays out.
The action of the play takes place in the child-proofed house of the hosts, a married couple with a couple of (unseen) toddler-age children. Other members of the cast are the choir director and her tone-deaf husband, along with three other female members of the choir. This is not a conventional musical with a fixed song list and formal arrangements; instead, a book of 111 holiday songs in lead sheet format is provided from which selections can be made. A musically talented cast can provide their own accompaniments on their instruments of choice.
A-Caroling Wee Will Went supplies an unusual holiday offering for theatrical companies with access to onstage musical talent. The dynamics of the choir and their marital relationships combine with songs and suspense to create a one-of-a-kind holiday production.
